Panel Discussion: Development, Ecology and Keralas' Future

Kerala’s development story is marked by impressive human development alongside growing ecological vulnerability. Rapid urbanisation, infrastructure expansion, tourism, resource extraction, changing land use and climate change are placing increasing pressure on the state’s forests, wetlands, rivers, coastlines and agricultural landscapes. The consequences are not equally distributed, with indigenous communities, fisherfolk, farmers and other vulnerable groups often bearing disproportionate social and livelihood costs. Moving beyond the binaries of development vs environment, the panel will explore interconnected issues of social marginalization, environmental justice and climate vulnerabilities. The panel will bring together professionals from diverse fields and explore the possibility of a future for Kerala that is socially equitable.
